A 160km Canadian Winter Ski Marathon of Hope
GATINEAU, Quebec, Canada Monday, February 4, 2008 The 42nd annual Canadian Ski Marathon being held February 9th and 10th will once again see over 2000 cross country skiers take to the hills promoting a spirit of fitness, friendship and fun.
This edition expects to be special as Montreal native Jessica Krejcik, a 13-year-old, will be attempting to become the youngest female in the CSMs history to complete the Gold Coureur des Bois. Inspired by her Marathon of Hope quest, Jessica will use her cross country ski challenge to raise money for childrens cancer wards all over the country.
I am very lucky. I get to do something that I love, cross country skiing, and to do something good at the same time. My challenge to get my gold-bar is a big one but it doesnt compare to the kids who live with cancer everyday. I am going to do my best to complete my gold-bar for them. said Jessie.
The Canadian Ski Marathon (CSM) was founded in 1967 by former Canadian National Ski team member, Don MacLeod. The annual two-day event features ten sections that span 160 kilometers of tranquility and beauty through the Quebec countryside: from Gatineau (Buckingham sector) to Lachute with an overnight stop in Montebello.
I cant say enough about Jessicas courage and I hope to be skiing along side of her, cheering her on. On behalf of all CSM participants, we say Go for it Jessie, we support you 100% of the way. said Greg Koegl, President of the CSM.
The Canadian Ski Marathon attracts over 2,200 skiers from 5 to 85 years of age. Keeping safety in mind, the CSM has over 500 volunteers that support all participants with frequent checkpoints along the trail, providing free snacks, ski wax services and free shuttle bus services to the start point of your choice and returns you to your accommodation or vehicle when done.
It is truly amazing to see so many people pushing their physical limits. Congratulations to all Canadian Ski Marathon participants, volunteers, participating cities and municipalities, and a special congratulation to Jessie! All together, you create a unique Canadian tradition Honorary CSM Chair The Honourable Lawrence Cannon.
