A. The Canadian Ski Marathon, the longest cross-country ski event in the world, is celebrating its 42nd year in February 2008. Skiers of all ages and ability come together from across Canada and around the world to take part in this unique and legendary celebration of winter. The CSM trail is divided into 10 sections of approximately 16 km each so that participants can ski as much or as little as they wish.
Q. When is the Canadian Ski Marathon held?
A. Every second weekend in February.
Q. Where does the Canadian Ski Marathon take place?
A. The CSM trail spans 160 km of western Quebec. It winds through the countryside from Gatineau (Buckingham sector) to Lachute, with an overnight stop in Montebello.
Q. Who participates in the CSM?
A. In 2005, the CSM hosted 2,250 skiers, ranging in age from 5 to 85 years. The CSM is the perfect event for all levels of skiers, from beginner to expert - you can ski as little as 12 km or as much as 160 km.
Q. Why should I participate in the CSM?
A. The CSM is dedicated to promoting a spirit of fitness, family, friendship, and fun. The CSM offers participants an ideal setting for celebrating the Canadian winter, taking in the beautiful Quebec countryside, and enjoying an adventure and personal challenge with family and friends.
Q. How do I register for the CSM?
A. You can now register online by clicking here, or you can print out the registration form  on the website and fax it or send it to the address listed on the form.
Q. Is the CSM a race?
A. The CSM is a classic-technique tour, not a race. Awards are given for the number of sections you complete, not for finishing first. As well, the CSM trail is so long, you can ski alone in solitude if you choose to.
Q. Do you have to camp out overnight?
A. You have heard of the 200 or so skiers known as Gold Coureur des Bois who camp out in the bush overnight. You will likely choose to join the remainder of the 2000 CSM skiers by staying in warmer quarters, such as the unique Fairmont Le Château Montebello, economy dormitory accommodations, or other Inns or B&Bs in Montebello and various towns along the trail.
Q. Can I bring my six-year-old daughter?
A. Absolutely, bring the whole family. There are great medals for youngsters to win, such as the Mighty Mite and Snowy Owl awards, as well as medals for seniors such as the Silver Tips award. Last year, skiers aged 5 to 85 skied the CSM.
Q. What is the cut-off time for the Coureurs des Bois and for the Tourers, who have completed the first 4 sections, to be allowed through to complete the last section each day?
A. Coureurs des Bois and Tourers who have completed all 4 proceeding sections by 3:15 pm will be allowed through to section 5 on Saturday and Coureurs des Bois and Tourers who have completed all 4 proceeding sections by 3:15 pm will be allowed through to section 10 on Sunday.
